The Business Gold Rewards Card from American Express OPEN is one of the best credit cards on the market with 30,000 bonus Membership Rewards after spending $5k in three months, several lucrative category bonuses, and automatic 5-10% discounts from dozens of companies through American Express OPEN Savings.
A new category bonus has been added to the card. Now you can earn 2x on all purchases from the following companies:
- Apple
- CDW
- Dell
- HP
- IBM
- Intuit
- Lenovo
- Microsoft
- Newegg
- Oracle
- Rack Space
- Sage Software
- Salesforce.com
- Symantec
- Tiger Direct
[Emphasis mine.]
This new category is in addition to the other category bonuses on the card:
- 3x on all airfare purchases–this is the best card for purchasing airfare
- 2x on all purchases at standalone gas stations in the US
- 2x on advertising–including Google and Facebook advertising
- 2x on shipping–including USPS, UPS, and FedEx
Membership Rewards are transferable points that transfer to over a dozen airlines. The transfer partners encompass several of the Six Types of Frequent Flyer Miles. This variety is extremely valuable–I value Membership Rewards at 2 cents each–because it means that no matter what type of trip I want, there is usually a transfer partner that offers a great deal on that type of award.
For instance, if I want a trip from the west coast to Hawaii, I would transfer to British Airways Avios. If I want a the most luxurious first class product in the world, I’d transfer to Singapore. If I want to fly United business class to Europe, I’d transfer to Aeroplan or ANA. And on and on.
Membership Rewards transfer 1:1 to over a dozen airlines. Some of my favorite transfer partners are:
- Aeroplan for its stopover rules
- ANA for its distance-based chart’s sweet spots like 63,000 miles for roundtrip business class from the Newark to London
- British Airways Avios for its distance-based chart’s sweet spots like 12,500 miles to Hawaii from the west coast
- Delta for Virgin Atlantic Upper Class without fuel surcharges
- Flying Blue (Air France) for one way awards on Delta metal
- Hawaiian for incredible award space to Hawaii, Asia, and Australia
- Singapore to book Singapore Suites Class or 30k roundtrips to Hawaii on United.
- Virgin Atlantic for incredibly cheap awards to London
The Business Rewards Gold Card is the best American Express business card at the moment because it has the most valuable sign up bonus and best category bonuses. I got one last September, and I have used it extensively for its airfare, gas, and advertising category bonuses.

Including Newegg and Tiger Direct is nice from a MS perspective, especially if out of the country most of the year like I am. Just about every week I see FAR items, though the terms can sometimes be more trouble than the points are worth.

The above link: “Delta for Virgin Atlantic Upper Class without fuel surcharges” is of great interest, but came away confused after reading it because that post contains the statement, “Virgin America flies to several American cities including:”. Can you clarify the relationship among the 3 Virgin A.s? Does the same booking trick work with Delta and V. Australia?
That’s a typo. There are three separate airlines. Delta miles only work on Virgin Atlantic.
