2020 has been quite a year! Most of us haven’t been able to travel much, but we sure have had a lot of great points and miles earning opportunities. There were increased welcome bonuses and improved bonus categories and last week we wrote about the great American Express 3X referral offer.
But one of our favorite banks, Chase, didn’t want to be left behind and also came up with a few lucrative offers that will allow us to earn a good number of extra points in the last two months of 2020.
The banks clearly want us to keep using our travel cards, even if we can’t really travel as freely as we’d like. Let’s look at all the ways Chase cardholders can earn extra points and miles right now.
If you are going to spend money this holiday season, which is going to be quite different this year, use the cards that offer the best rewards. Whether you’ll be earning extra airline miles, hotel points, or Ultimate Rewards points, this is a great opportunity to add to your stash of points.

Chase Spending Bonuses
To start, collect all of your Chase cards and head over to Chase’s promo page to see which of your cards are eligible for the bonus. It’s an easy process, you’ll just need to enter the last 4 digits of the card, the last name and the zip code.

Amazon and Grocery Spending Bonuses up to 5X
The banks know that consumers will spend a lot of money on Amazon and groceries in the next couple of months so Chase came out with some really enticing spending bonuses on its co-branded credit cards. Amazon offers are especially lucrative because it’s hard to find a credit card card that earns more than 1-1.5X on Amazon purchases, so this is a truly outstanding opportunity to get great rewards on everything you buy on Amazon.
From November 1, 2020 to December 31, 2020, you could earn 5X up to $1,500 in combined purchases per month on Amazon (combined with groceries – more on that later) on these cards, however that offer is no longer valid:
- Aer Lingus Visa Signature® Card
- British Airways Visa Signature® Card
- Iberia Visa Signature® Card
- Southwest Rapid Rewards® Plus Credit Card
- Southwest Rapid Rewards® Premier Credit Card
- Southwest Rapid Rewards® Priority Credit Card
- United Club℠ Infinite Card
- United℠ Explorer Card
- The World of Hyatt Credit Card
- IHG® Rewards Club Premier Credit Card
- IHG® Rewards Club Traveler Credit Card
- United Mileage Plus (no longer open to applicants)
- United Mileage Plus Awards (no longer open to applicants)
- United MileagePlus Select (no longer open to applicants)
- United Presidential Plus (no longer open to applicants)
- Legacy Hyatt card (no longer open to applications)
- United Club (no longer open to applicants)
- IHG Rewards Club Select (no longer open to applications)
All information about Aer Lingus Visa Signature® Card and Iberia Visa Signature® Card have been collected independently by milevalue.com. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer.
After checking the Chase promo link, I got this offer on my World of Hyatt and United Explorer cards and I already know that I am going to be maxing out this promotion on both cards. I often book United award tickets and stay at Hyatt hotels, so this is an amazing opportunity to replenish both of these accounts.
Grocery Spending Bonuses up to 5X
The credit card spending category turned out to be quite competitive with many card issuers offering temporary increased bonuses on supermarket purchases. Most co-branded Chase travel cards got an offer of either a 3X or 5X bonus on grocery spending throughout the remainder of 2020.
Keep in mind that there’s a combined cap of $1,500 per month on Amazon and grocery store purchases. When I saw that my World of Hyatt card earns 3X on groceries but 5X on Amazon, the wheels started turning. I’ve decided that in order to maximize my Whole Foods purchases, where I shop often, I’ll just buy Whole Food gift cards on Amazon and earn 5X instead of 3X on the things I am going to buy anyway.
These cards earn 5X on groceries (up to $1,500 per month in combined purchases with Amazon):
- Aer Lingus Visa Signature® Card
- British Airways Visa Signature® Card
- Iberia Visa Signature® Card
- Marriott Bonvoy Boundless Credit Card
- Southwest Rapid Rewards® Plus Credit Card
- Southwest Rapid Rewards® Premier Credit Card
- Southwest Rapid Rewards® Priority Credit Card
- United Club℠ Infinite Card
- United℠ Explorer Card
- United Club (no longer open to applicants)
- United Mileage Plus (no longer open to applicants)
- United Mileage Plus Awards (no longer open to applicants)
- United MileagePlus Select (no longer open to applicants)
- United Presidential Plus (no longer open to applicants)
And these cards earn 3X bonus on groceries (up to $1,500 per month in combined purchases with Amazon):
- The World of Hyatt Credit Card
- IHG® Rewards Club Premier Credit Card
- IHG® Rewards Club Traveler Credit Card
- IHG Rewards Club Select (no longer open to applications)
- Legacy Hyatt card (no longer open to applications)
Chase Sapphire Cards Grocery Bonus Offers
In October, Chase finally announced a new grocery bonus category for its Sapphire cards. Unlike the co-branded cards, the new bonus category starts November 1, 2020, and goes through April 30, 2021:
- Chase Sapphire Reserve® cardholders will earn 3X Ultimate Rewards points on up to $1,000 in monthly grocery store purchases.
- Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card cardholders will earn 2X Ultimate Rewards points on up to $1,000 in monthly grocery store purchases.
Chase also announced an extension of categories that trigger the Chase Sapphire Reserve®’s $300 travel credit. Previously, you could only use the annual credit on travel, gas and groceries through the end of 2020. However, recently Chase had announced that Chase Sapphire Reserve® cardholders will be able to use it on those purchases through June 30, 2021. This is a great benefit and will definitely help offset the card’s high annual fee.
Targeted Internet, Cable, Phone, Utilities, Insurance up to 5X
Unlike the grocery and Amazon bonuses, this is a highly targeted offer – unfortunately not a lot of Chase customers are eligible and the promotional period varies. I haven’t received this offer on any of my family’s cards. Some Chase Sapphire Reserve® cardholders can earn 5X on purchases within these categories, up to $2,000 in total.
This is a great offer, so definitely check Chase’s promo page to see if you qualify.
Earn 5X on Lyft
This isn’t a new promotion but still worth mentioning here. All Chase’s Ultimate Rewards earning cards earn at least 5X on Lyft purchases. Here’s a list of cards that qualify for each benefit.
You can earn 10X Chase Ultimate Rewards points with Chase Sapphire Reserve®.
You can earn 5X Chase Ultimate Rewards points with these cards:
- Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card
- Chase Sapphire
- Chase Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card
- Chase Ink Plus (no longer open to applications)
- Chase Ink Business Cash® Credit Card
- Chase Ink Business Unlimited® Credit Card
- Chase Freedom (no longer open to applications)
- Chase Freedom Unlimited®
Lyft Pink benefit
In addition to these cards’ 5X earning rate, Chase Sapphire Reserve® cardmembers are eligible for one free year of Lyft Pink. This benefit is only available for one Lyft account per credit card account.
Lyft Pink is a monthly membership that gives you 15% off rides in the US and includes other perks, such as a relaxed cancellation policy, waived lost and found fees, and priority pickups at airports.
And to sweeten the deal, Lyft has partnered with Grubhub to offer Pink members free GrubHub+ membership which includes unlimited free delivery from participating restaurants. If you’ve ever ordered food delivery, you know that the delivery fee can be quite high so this is a great way to save on restaurant food delivered to your door.
10X on Marriott Bonvoy Hotel Purchases
Chase customers who have the Chase Marriott Bonvoy cards now earn 10X on Marriott purchases on up to $3,500 through December 31, 2020. Qualifying Marriott Bonvoy spending includes stays at Bonvoy hotels, gift cards and online Marriott boutiques.
Check the enrollment page to make sure you qualify and to enroll your card.
Final Thoughts
The banks are eager for us to continue using our travel rewards cards and to keep spending money. Competition is always good for consumers and right now we have lots of opportunities to pad our points and miles balances.
So don’t miss this chance, especially during the holiday shopping season, to earn a good stash of travel rewards. We will travel again, and when we are ready to get on the plane or stay at a hotel, we’ll have the points at the ready.
Travel well,
Anna

Can you purchase Amazon gift cards on Amazon website and get 5x’s the points with credit cards listed?
Yes you can!
Yes, this should work! All Amazon purchases, including gift cards, should code as 5X. When in doubt, I always make a small purchase first, and if it works as intended, I’ll go bigger.
