Until July 31, 2014, you can transfer 20,000 SPG Starpoints to 30,000 American Airlines AAdvantage miles.
It’s July 2nd, and I think we can probably declare this the best miles deal July will see!
- How many Starpoints can you transfer?
- Do Starpoints transfer instantly to American Airlines miles?
- In what increment must you transfer Starpoints to maximize this deal?
“From July 1 through July 31, 2014, simply convert your Starpoints® to American Airlines AAdvantage miles and earn a 20% bonus. As always, for every 20,000 Starpoints transferred within the same transaction, SPG® will automatically add another 5,000 miles. With the additional 20% mileage bonus offered by the AAdvantage program, you will receive a total of 30,000 miles from the transaction.”
- 20,000 Starpoints = 20,000 AAdvantage miles (1:1 transfer partner)
- Standard SPG bonus = 5,000 AAdvantage miles per 20,000 Starpoints transferred
- AAdvantage 20% mileage bonus = 5,000 AAdvantage miles
- Total: 20,000 Starpoints = 30,000 AAdvantage miles
You can transfer up to 79,999 Starpoints per 24 hours to an airline. Since you need to send Starpoints in 20k point increments to maximize transfer bonuses, the effective limit is 60,000 Starpoints per day to 90,000 American Airlines miles.
Starpoints do not transfer instantly to American Airlines miles. The transfer usually take 2-4 days in my experience.
Other than the daily limit, there is no limit to the number of Starpoints you can transfer to American Airlines miles during this promotion.

Starwood Guest Preferred Transfer to Miles Terms and Conditions
Starwood Preferred Guests can transfer up to 79,999 of their Starpoints per transaction per program within a 24-hour period to the American Airlines AAdvantage program. Plus, for every 20,000 Starpoints transferred within the same transaction, Starwood will automatically add another 5,000 Starpoints! This means that up to 94,999 Starpoints can be transferred into your AAdvantage account.
There is no minimum Starpoint transfer requirement for Platinum Preferred Guest members. Gold Preferred Guest members have a minimum transfer requirement of 1,500 Starpoints, and Preferred Guest members have a minimum transfer requirement of 2,500 Starpoints.
Transfer maximums are based on a combination of member Starpoints and the Starwood Preferred Guest airline transfer transaction bonus. Only one airline transfer transaction per member per 24-hour period is allowed; multiple transfer transactions within the same 24-hour period will reject. Both the Starwood Preferred Guest and AAdvantage account must have identical member names in order to complete this request; different names will cause the transfer to reject. Airline transfers are one-way, non-reversible and non-refundable.
Starwood Preferred Guest and Starpoints are marks of Starwood Hotels & Resort Worldwide, Inc.

It’s a 20% bonus, not 50%. Title is grossly misleading.
Title doesn’t say 50% bonus. Do you disagree that 20k Starpoints transfer to 50% more (30k) AA miles?
Not good at math but isn’t 20% of 20,000 = 4,000?
Or are you getting 20% of the 25,000 that you ultimately get when you transfer your points to AA?
20% bonus on the 25k AA you’d normally get. You definitely get 30k AA for 20k SPG under this promo.
Which use of SPG points is more valuable: this bonus to AA miles or using SPG points for their nights and flights benefit? What is the correct way to evaluate?
Is this offer an indication there’s an AA devaluation right around the corner? If so, is this transfer still a good idea? Starwood points are really valuable, and I doubt devalued AA miles would be anywhere close. It’d be nice if you could discuss a bit about the merits and drawbacks/risks of the transfer instead of just saying the offer is available. It’s usually your analysis of an offer that sets this site apart. Thanks.
I tried to sneak one by you guys without the anlaysis! Good catch. I’ll put it up soon.
Is this really worth it as Starwood points are very useful with all airlines and great hotels. Your best advice
I smell an AA devaluation very soon as well.
It feels like they, AA & US Airways, have been offering A LOT of points for sell and other deals and promotions to get more points out there.
Will they give ANY warning or stick it to us again like the Explorer Award and free one ways?
From what I have read online, most seam the devaluation won’t happen until 2015.
I keep trying to find all of the articles I can on the best of AA/USAir awards and which will most likely be devalued, for ideas to hurry and book this year / NOW.
Now, with this promo… I like it.. but I think I am still more interested in using my SPG points, with the new Sapphire partner Krisflyer towards a Suites class seat.

Assuming one already has the Starwood SPG Amex, is it possible to earn more Starpoints before the end of the month? Put another way, assuming you spend $XXXX today, does Amex award those new Starpoints immediately or do you have to wait until your next statement before they show up?
Today they sent another offer:
“Here’s how it works:
Convert 20,000 Starpoints into Dividend Miles (in one transaction).
As always, SPG® will automatically add 5,000 miles.
You’ll earn 20% bonus miles.”
