The cliff notes? Lufthansa is a major member of the Star Alliance, which also includes United, US Airways, and Air Canada. Lufthansa Miles & More miles can be used on any Star Alliance partner.

55,000 Lufthansa miles–the sign up bonus plus normal spending needed to unlock it–will get you:

  • Two domestic roundtrips on US Airways or United
  • One roundtrip to Hawaii with one direction in a flat bed in First Class
  • A roundtrip to Europe
  • One way to Europe in flat bed Business Class
  • Transfer in Starpoints to get to 85,000 Lufthansa miles to book one way from the US to Europe in First Class on Lufthansa or Swiss

How can you use your Lufthansa miles? When does the 50,000 mile offer end? Who is this offer right for?

Card Details

The Lufthansa Premier Miles & More World MasterCard® comes with 20,000 bonus miles on first purchase and 30,000 more after spending $5k in the first three months. Including bonus miles and miles for spending, you will have 55,000 total miles after spending $5k on the card.

The card has a $79 annual fee that is not waived for the first year unless you have top tier status with Lufthansa. That’s a price I willingly pay to get access to 55,000 Lufthansa miles!

This is the second time we’ve seen the Lufthansa card’s bonus go to 50,000 miles. The first time was in May, and I got the card then for myself. When this 50,000 mile offer ends, the offer will likely revert to the standard 20k mile offer.

The offer’s landing page states: “This offer ends December 15, 2013 and may be canceled at any time without notice.” December 15 is this Sunday. I’ve also heard from a knowledgeable source that the offer will end “on or around December 13,” which is Friday.

All of the language hedges a bit, so we do not know the ending date for this offer. My takeaway is that if you want the card, apply sooner rather than later. Whenever you apply, you are applying for whatever sign up bonus the application page states.

My post on the Lufthansa Miles & More program is the ultimate guide to the miles: Miles & More Program Primer & Six Great Uses (and Two Bad Uses) for 55,000 Lufthansa Miles

My Anatomy of an Award posts on redeeming the miles are the only posts of their kind anywhere that go step-by-step through actual bookings:

The most important thing to know about Lufthansa miles is that, in addition to government taxes, fuel surcharges are imposed on many awards. You want to redeem your Lufthansa miles for awards with no fuel surcharges.

Those include:

  • Flights within the US and Canada including Hawaii
  • Flights to Central America
  • Flights to South America
  • Flights to the Caribbean
  • US Airways flights to Europe
  • Some United flights to Asia

Most anywhere you want to go, you can find a way to get there with Lufthansa miles, so getting 50k bonus miles is an incredible offer!

Recap

This is the final week of the 50k bonus mile offer on The Lufthansa Premier Miles & More World MasterCard®. If you dream of flat beds to Hawaii, domestic trips to visit family, or a dream European vacation in First Class, this is an offer you need to consider.
