Daily Getaways is a series of daily discounted travel packages sponsored by the US Travel Association that started last two weeks ago and runs for three more. Every weekday at 1 PM ET, a discounted travel package or packages will go on sale, and the best deals sell out in just a few minutes.
In 2013, Scott blogged every deal. In 2014, 2015, and 2016, Scott blogged the good ones:
- IHG Rewards Points for 0.57 Cents Means $29 Hotels
- Save $120 on Car Rentals Today Only
- Today Only: 19% Off Any Future Marriott Stay
- Today Only: Hyatts from $52, Best Hyatts for $312
- Today Only: All Wyndhams, Including All Inclusive Resorts, for $150
- Today Only: $24 Hotel Rooms. Possibly Best Daily Getaway of the Year
- Many more
The best deals tend to be the selling of hotel points at super low prices or the purchasing of underpriced certificates for hotel stays and car rentals.
Here’s the overview of the third week. The best deal for the most people this week will be either the sale of Choice Privileges Points on Friday, or Avis’ One-Day Car Rental for $30 that goes on sale Tuesday. The other days offers’ could be valuable if you plan on visiting those specific destinations before the certificate’s expiration.
Tuesday’s Deal
The $30 one-day Premium rental is “valid at any participating Avis location in the U.S. (excluding the New York Metro area), Canada, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.” You must use the certificate(s) by May 15, 2018. For more expensive rental locations like Hawaii, this is a great deal.
You can use up to seven one-day rental certificates on a single rental, and rental certificates like this are extra awesome because they mean that you don’t have to pay percentage taxes on your car rental, though you do have to pay flat fee taxes like “facility charges.”
Remember this deal goes on sale at 1 PM ET Tuesday, so be ready at your computer before that time if you want to snag it!
Friday’s Deal
On Friday you can buy Choice Privileges points ranging in price from .4 cents each (when you buy the largest amount of 40k) to .45 cents each (when you buy the smallest amount of 20k). You can buy two of each package, and there are four different packages, so the maximum you can purchase is eight packages total.
Note that the packages have names like “Sleep Inn: Stay 2 Nights for $90,” but the terms and conditions make it very clear that you just receive the number of points listed in the package description in your account without any requirement to use them at the listed brand. If you bought the maximum, you would be getting 256k Choice Privileges points for $1,074, at an average price of 4.2 cents each.
Choice Privileges points can be used at over 6,300 hotels with the following brand names:
- Comfort Inn
- Comfort Suites
- Quality Inn
- Sleep Inn
- Clarion
- Cambria Hotel & Suites
- Mainstay Suites
- Suburban Extended Stay
- Econo Lodge
- Rodeway Inn
- Ascend Hotel Collection
These are mostly utilitarian places, not fancy. But Choice Privilege points are valuable because…
- There are no blackout dates
- There are over 1,500 Choice hotels with reward nights at 8,000 points or less.
- Reward nights at Choice hotels worldwide are available from 6,000 to 35,000 points (excluding Australasia where points required are up to 75,000)
Look out for individual posts on specific deals in the coming weeks, as well as a recap of the week to come at the end of each week.
