Loyal reader Drew sent along an amazing targeted offer he received to continue spending on his US Airways® Premier World MasterCard®.
If he spends $500 per month on his card in August, September, and October, he’ll get 15,000 bonus miles!
That means for a total of $1,500 in spending, he will earn 16,500 miles, which is 11 US Airways miles per dollar!
The email came to Drew with the subject “Earn 15,000 miles with your card!” Check your email for a similar offer if you have a US Airways® Premier World MasterCard®.
Most of us got the US Airways® Premier World MasterCard® for its 40,000 bonus miles with no minimum spending requirement. Check out all the places you can go with just that sign up bonus.
Barclaycard seems to recognize that fact and offers frequent promotions to encourage us to get in the habit of regular spending on the card. These offers are targeted, but it seems like everyone eventually gets targeted for one or more:
- Earn 20% bonus miles (1.2 miles per dollar) on all purchases between July 1 and August 31, 2014.
- Earn 2x-10x US Airways miles in select categories from January 1 – March 31, 2014. I was offered 5x in grocery stores, movie theaters, and utility bills.
- Frequent offers to spend $750 per month for three consecutive months and earn 15,000 bonus miles. (The same offer Drew got, but Drew’s spending requirement is smaller.)
It looks like Barclaycard is pulling out all the stops to keep people engaged with the US Airways® Premier World MasterCard®, which will only be open to new customers until the US Airways and American Airlines loyalty programs combine early next year. Don’t miss out on getting the card and its 40,000 bonus miles.
- Should Drew take advantage of his bonus offer?
- How can you get targeted for the same offer?
Is This a Good Promo?
Yes, Drew should definitely take advantage of earning 15,000 bonus US Airways miles for spending $500 per month for three months. It works out to 11 miles per dollar, which is on par with meeting the minimum spending requirements on some of the best sign up bonuses.
Plus US Airways miles are my favorite miles because of the cheap award chart and lax routing rules.
If he can use them before early 2015, that’s great. If not, they will become American Airlines miles, which is hardly a bad outcome.
Similar Promos on Other Barclaycards
Barclaycard also puts out similar targeted and frequent bonus offers on its other cards like the Barclaycard Arrival PlusTM World Elite MasterCard® (up to 7x on certain categories for a few months) and Premier Miles & More® World MasterCard® (15,000 bonus Lufthansa miles after spending $750 in three consecutive months.)
How Can You Get Targeted?
I asked Drew some follow up questions to see what might have triggered his targeting.
He told me that he got his card in August 2013 and hasn’t really used it since his first purchase.
That makes me speculate–and this is pure speculation–that he was offered this promotion so that he would pay his next annual fee in August 2014 and get in the habit of using his card. (Paying the annual fee doesn’t change my calculation much. It’s still a great deal to get 15,000 bonus miles for $89.)
In the past, people have gotten similar 15,000 bonus mile offers for ongoing spending just a few months after opening their US Airways cards, though, so we see people get targeted at many points in their card membership year.
Ultimately I don’t think there’s much you can do to get targeted for these awesome promotions, but if you are, take advantage.

The fine print states that your account must have been open and you must have paid your annual fee. Looks like they are certainly trying to get people to hold onto this card. Still worth it to me, though!
They’ve gotten savvier. I got one of these for my account I closed in May. Not worth it to me when I was getting 100k AA miles on the Exec card.
I got the same offer in the spring. Spent $500 in March, April and May. Points posted in July, about 30 days after June’s statement posted (thus proving May’s spending).
So don’t be in a hurry to have and use the points. Nice bump for (very) little effort.
Thanks for the data point!
After reading this, I checked my email and saw that I missed the same offer of 15,000 miles but with $750 spend in those months. I just received the card in June, so they are targeting other cardholders, too. Thanks for the heads up as I will be taking advantage of this!
I received the same offer back in May for spending in June, July, and August. I shared about it here:
http://www.pointsnews.com/targeted-offer-us-airways-dividend-miles-mastercard-15k-bonus-miles/
I was in a similar situation as Drew – very little spending, annual fee due June 2014. This wasn’t a card I planned to cancel because I was getting a 10K bonus with annual fee. So, the extra 15K was just another bonus!
So it does say the annual fee must be paid, but if Barclay’s credits it back to your account, I wonder if that counts? Maybe it’s best to just pay it, considering it’s 15,000 points, plus I’ll get another 10,000 for the annual bonus. Not bad…
Similar situation for me – I got my card in August 2013 – but I got targeted with a crappier offer: 5,000 miles for the same spending. Now I feel gypped.
I would still take advantage of that offer, but that’s too bad.
I had forgotten about the annual bonus! Is there a way to check and see if my card gets that? I can’t remember if this particular card had that or not.
I got this same thing, but for July to September, and for the Platinum no the Premiere World. I’ve kept this card for a few years, so it’s very worth it. Today I just put my $501 in Amazon Payments on it for August. (There was some weird fine print that made it sound like it has to be more than $500 a month, so I do $501 just to be safe)
Sounds like a better offer than the AA dining offer of 10,000 bonus miles for 10 dines @ $40 each minimum. With all these bonus offers I have to believe the upcoming devaluation of AA/US miles is going to be significant.
Definitely fearing the same… though perhaps not this year (after all they DID just deval pretty significantly a few months ago… )
There’s probably, what, a net “creation” of 100MM AA miles from all the AA Exec Plat card turns. Heck, just my SO and I netted half-a-mil in 4 months… Just as with the Federal reserve, all the creation of currency has to lead to less value. For FF programs, that means redemption devaluation.
I too just got the offer card by snail mail this week, actually the day after I received a letter advising me about my annual fee notice was coming due in August and that I had until 8/29 at 5 Pm to call and cancel if I did not want to renew the card. The 15K miles /$1500 is good, but any thoughts on chances if I close the card now and wait 3-4 months and apply for a new one to get the 40K offer if it is still available? I have been auto approved for all 3 of my current Barclays cards previously so I am thinking a cancel/wait-a-little and re apply may be beneficial…… Thoughts?
Ryan:
Mine doesn’t have weird language at all, as it clearly says “$500 or more.” What is your weird language that makes you feel it is over $500?
Never mind, I found what you are referring to. To play it safe, I’ll do an extra $1 each month. Thanks for noticing!
I got a 5000 Arrivals Points for $750 a month for 3 months as an offer.
My wife has now gotten two 15k US Airways offers this cardholder year. One 3 months after she got the card and one when her annual fee was due.
I am working on an offer now for Nov, Dec, Jan, and just completed spend of $500+ purchases for December, and then an UNEXPECTED refund of $271 for a purchase in September was posted. Wondering about the statement “net purchases”! Would this purchase reduce my NET purchases or not affect since I did complete $500+ purchases in December? Trying to complete spend on other cards so hate to put more spend in Dec, but also hate to lose out on 15,000 miles?!!??
