Update at 1:05 PM ET on 6/11/13: The deal is on. I just purchased three, and the deal has not sold out.
End of update.
Today is the second day of five weeks of discounted travel packages sponsored by the US Travel Association and American Express called Daily Getaways.
Every weekday at 1 PM ET, a discounted travel package or packages will go on sale and will sell out in a few minutes. Some of the offers will be awesome; some will be duds.
Today’s deal is $50 certificate toward an Alamo gift card for $22.50. That’s a sweet 55% discount! You can buy three and use them towards the same rental for an $82.50 discount.
How can you get the deal?
All Daily Getaways packages are discounted. And you get an additional 10% off each sale price by paying with an American Express, so that’s a no-brainer, and I’ll always quote prices after the American Express discount.
You can buy a maximum of three Alamo $50 gift certificates for $22.50 each, and there are 2,000 available.
I expect this sale to last quite a bit longer than yesterday’s 20%-off sale on Marriott GiftCards
“Within 5 business days of purchase, Alamo will send the purchased certificate(s) to the e-mail address you provide at time of purchase. The e-mail will provide detailed information on how to redeem your certificate either by phone or online.”
This is what happens if you try to purchase something where all quantities are already in someone’s cart.
This doesn’t mean the deal is sold out. If someone doesn’t complete his purchase, that quantity will immediately become available for someone else. Keep checking until the dreaded “Sold Out” appears.
To maximize your chances of getting in on the deal, I recommend using a site like whattimeisit.com to figure out the official time. Today the sale started on time to the second. Keep refreshing for the best chance.
I will be by my computer at 1 PM EST / 10 AM PST / 7 AM HST / (2 PM in Buenos Aires) to try to snag an Alamo certificate. What about you? Post your successful or failed attempt in the comments, so we can gauge how quick you had to be to snag a card.

Looks like a good deal, except that you can’t use the certificate towards taxes and fees. I priced out a rental for a week at BWI, and a good $100 is just taxes and fees. Too bad.
Does this work just like a store credit? Will it apply to bookings made via Costco.com?
This is not valid for costco.com purchases (i just called to verify).
However for me, it was still cheaper to buy these coupons (got 3 just now) than to do costco.com
Many thanks to Milevalue for this!
Quite often (especially for leisure travel) the taxes will be way higher than the base. Considering also that you have to book directly with Alamo and forfeit all company discounts, promotions, etc. I don’t think this is a good deal overall. Pass.

[…] I bought the maximum (three) last year on an identical deal and used them for a week long rental in Los Angeles, saving $82.50. I don’t rent cars often, but I do occasionally, so I’ll certainly buy three more this year. […]
