Reader Joanna emailed me to let me know the results of calling Barclaycard:
“My US Airways® Premier World MasterCard® annual fee was due August 29. I called and got 5,000 miles for $1,000 spend over 90 days and annual fee waived for a year.”
Barclaycard is really going all out to get people to get this card, keep this card, and use this card, and Joanna’s email is another example. (Your mileage may vary.)
We know that the US Airways® Premier World MasterCard® will no longer be offered as soon as the US Airways and American Airlines frequent flyer programs integrate, some time in early 2015. That means that the chance to earn 40,000 bonus miles after first purchase will disappear soon. Check out all the places you can go with just the sign up bonus.
We know that Barclaycard offers many cardholders big bonuses for ongoing spending like Drew who was offered 15,000 bonus US Airways miles for spending $500 per month for three consecutive months.
And now we know that Barclaycard will waive the annual fee for some folks who call and ask like Joanne did.
By the way, Joanne asked me about her other carrot, whether she should spend $1,000 in the next 90 days for 5,000 bonus miles. I gave her a resounding “YES!” That means she’ll get six miles per dollar on those purchases, 1,000 for the normal purchases and 5,000 bonus miles for $1,000 in spending.
Six miles per dollar is a fantastic deal, especially when we’re talking about US Airways miles, which are the highest value miles in the world in my opinion.

Yep..in Oct. 2013 they billed $89 for the AF for the US Airways card. I immediately called and asked for a credit for the AF, after being put on hold for a few minutes, I got the $89 statement credit. I purchased a few things for about 2 months, paid the bill in full each month, now, I haven’t made a purchase in months. This card was my first Barclay’s card, with the lowest CL, now I use my Arrivals + card instead.
Glad to hear
I just asked for my annual fee to be waived, and they agreed to do so.
But I now have second thoughts, as I received a promotion in the snail mail offering me 15,000 miles if I spend $500 per month for the next 3 months AND PAY MY ANNUAL FEE.
I am assuming I won;t be eligible now and I am missing out on a cheap purchase of miles. Anyone else have this promotion and also got the fee waiver?
You might want to call in and play dumb a bit. Ask if the snail mail offer requires registration or if it’s already on your account. If it’s already on your account, you’re probably going to get the miles.
I received the exact same offer for my Barclays Lufthansa Miles & More card. Called in to ask to waive the annual fee – they did it no questions asked, plus offered the 5000 bonus miles if I hit $1k in 90 days.
I’m still trying to hit the regular bonus for the card (30k after $5k spend). The one unanswered question is whether I have to spend an additional $1k on top of the $5k, or if they are separate. I’m hoping separate!
So you called in almost immediately after getting the card and they waived the fee? Wow.
The companion certificate I received is “valid for roundtrip, coach-class within the contiguous 48 United States…” So I was bummed when I found I couldn’t use the companion certificate for travel from Honolulu. Just wondering if there’s actual 2 different AF US Airways cards.
As far as I know, there is one, and that is always a term of the companion pass.
Scott, i’m wondering what you or any other readers think of this. This is the second time i’ve had this card and gotten the sign-up bonus. My annual fee will come up in about 2 weeks. I’ve read on FlyerTalk of people getting the 10K anniversary bonus and then being able to close the card within 60 days to not pay the annual fee. Has anyone else done this? Do you think I’ll be able to pull it off and then apply a third time for the card before it disappears? Thanks for your thoughts.
I recently cancelled this card for both my wife and I. We both got it last year, and the AF posted on June 30th. I cancelled mine when I was moving credit around to get the Hawaiian card, I could have kept it open but decided to just cancel it as I knew I’d be directly applying for the personal Hawaiian card as well. No retention offer at that point.
When cancelling my wife’s card she was offered either just a flat statement credit to cover the AF or an easy conversion to the Arrival+. I declined both offers and cancelled the card, and will get her the Arrival+ in the near future with the signup bonus.
Yati – I can’t say for sure yet, but so far they have not taken back the 10k miles from either mine or my wife’s US Air account. I’m confident enough that they won’t that I declined the AF statement credit on my wife’s card and closed it outright. I’ll report back if those miles go missing. 🙂 It’s been about 3 weeks since I cancelled both cards.
Just an update, my points never disappeared… Now I just hope the card will last a few more months to get it in for one more cycle.
Had AF dropped and offered the 5K miles for $1K spend in beginning of July. Bought two $500 Visa gift cards to meet spend. Cycle just posted, but no 5K miles. Waiting for a response to my inquiry when the 5K miles will post.
No luck. They offered to eliminate the annual fee if I waived the benefits, including the 40K miles. I think they have been deluged with requests and decided to pull the plug.
Thanks for the helpful post! Just made a call to CS about a Miles&More card and received the same offer as DavidNJ. They agreed to refund the AF and offered 5K miles for $1K spend by November.
@milevalue
perhaps im wrong, but this is misleading.. youre not writing about the 1st AF which must be paid in order to receive bonus (or are you?)… youre writing about subsequent AFs
Do you think you can get the fee waived on the first year for the Barclay Us Air Business card ?
No, but if you find differently, let me know.
I called three times about the Miles & More card. Barclay’s reps are saying that “due to the partner (Lufthansa)” they can no longer offer a retention bonus or waive annual fee. All three of them used the same wording–so perhaps it’s true?
I just called to cancel mine and all they offered was to waive the annual fee and then to sign me up for a 2 points per dollar promotion for the next 3 months. I took it, but I’m still thinking about cancelling the card. I was really bummed there was no bonus miles retention offer.
Good Evening,
I just received a brand new Barclay’s US Airways Dividend Miles card today. I signed up for the 50000 mile promo after the first purchase and paying the $89AF. I was wondering if anyone on this forum knows the answers to the following questions:
1. Has anyone received a credit for $89 (or AF waiver) for the 1st AF (for a new card)?
2. If this card is cancelled within 30 days of being billed the AF, will Barclays refund the AF?
Greatly appreciate any input you can provide.
Thank You!
I just called to cancel after getting the Citi American MC offer while on a recent flight with 50k bonus miles. When I called for the Barclay US Airways MC/Aviator Red card, there was no offer for retention when I said I was calling to cancel because of the AF (1 month prior to annual renewal) and for a lower interest rate. Ymmv.
In March, I called to complain about something on one of my cards (can’t rember what) and they offered to refund my annual fee. They applied the credit to the wrong card. I was very surprised to see the credit on the new card that I opened the month before!
