Avianca Brazil (formerly Ocean Air) has joined Star Alliance, and its award space is already searchable on aeroplan.com and bookable with Star Alliance miles.

This is great news for people with United miles, LifeMiles, Singapore miles, Air Canada miles, and Lufthansa miles who want to fly to Brazil because Avianca Brazil has a huge route network.

Where Avianca Brazil Flies

Avianca Brazil has hubs in Sao Paulo (GRU) and Brasilia (BSB) and flies to a few dozen destinations in Brazil. Its only international route is Fortaleza to Bogota, Colombia.

Where to Search Avianca Brazil Flights

You can search Avianca award space on aeroplan.com. Here’s how. Any award space you find on aeroplan.com is bookable with any type of Star Alliance miles by calling the airline whose miles you want to use.

On aeroplan.com, the airline is listed by its code “O6.”

Screen Shot 2015-07-23 at 9.31.51 PM Avianca flights do not have fuel surcharges, so the awards should be surcharge-free with all miles.

Expect taxes of about $10 per segment.Screen Shot 2015-07-23 at 9.33.04 PM I found good award space in economy on all the routes I checked including Fortaleza to Bogota. I didn’t see Business Class award space.Screen Shot 2015-07-23 at 9.46.06 PM

Award Prices

Most of us will book these flights for zero miles.

These flights are primarily valuable to Americans as a way to connect the rest of Brazil to United’s flights to Sao Paulo from Chicago, Houston, Newark, and Washington.

Adding Avianca Brazil flights to United flights does not increase the mileage price of the award. This is true whether you are booking United flights plus Avianca Brazil flights with United miles, LifeMiles, Singapore miles, Air Canada miles, and Lufthansa miles.

You can also just book one way awards within Brazil for 12,500 Singapore miles plus $10.

Bottom Line

Avianca Brazil adds exciting new redemption options with Star Alliance miles. Search award space on aeroplan.com, and add an intra-Brazil segment to your next award.
