Update 2/4/14: Devaluation is live. It’s different than we were told it would be.
Update at 3:18 PM: Some routes now show the updated price. For instance LAX-HNL is 22,500 in economy. Some routes don’t. For instance ORD-FRA for today’s flight in Lufthansa Business is showing 50,000 (the old price, new price is 70,000). And many searches show no results when there should be tons of results. As anticipated, the implementation is a disaster.
It’s 6:30 AM CT–the time at United headquarters–on February 3rd, and the United devaluation still isn’t live.
Los Angeles to Honolulu is still pricing at 20k miles one way in economy. That will be 22,500 miles when the new prices show up online.
The new prices were supposed to arrive February 1 (Saturday), though Bill covered the quiet changes on united.com that pushed back the date to February 3 (today).
For reference, this is what the devaluation will look like and these are the awards you really should book before the new prices cripple them.
So let’s open this up to the commentariat. Predict (to the minute) when the new prices will (at least begin to) be live on united.com. Closest to the right answer will win pride and admiration!

United search engine is fucked. Most international searches produce no results
I always wondering if the whole devaluation thing was a ruse to get United miles off the streets and to get butts in seats. Then when enough millions of miles had been burned, United revokes the devaluation, “having heard the concerns of its most valuable asset: its customers.” (Or some garbage like that.) Would be a win-win for them, no?
That would have been nice. But I think they really were paying higher costs for the partner first class space–not high enough to make the old arrangement unprofitable–so they passed those on to us.
No chance that will happen. United doesn’t care about its customers. In general that is troubling trend in the US airline sector. There will be three massive airlines left and they can more or less do whatever they want and not care about the customer. It’s mostly a monopoly divided into three players going forward. Smaller airlines can’t hurt them enough.
I think the current landscape for airlines is plenty competitive in the US. We are not overpaying for airfare. I don’t trust as much that there is enough competition in loyalty programs.

It’s really pathetic how buggy their award searches are ATM. Impressive. LAX-FRA, HKG-NRT, LAX-NRT all have NO availability whatsoever the next couple months. EXCEPT for today, lol.
