Thanks to reader Mulbry, who found some roundtrips to Hawaii incorporating stopovers. I hope everyone is thinking what I thought. Where there are stopovers and open jaws, free oneways can be constructed.
I immediately set about about to find free oneways the same I described on Friday.
And I confirmed my hunch. Free oneways are possible on United awards to Hawaii.
It’s just one more option to get a free oneway on a United award.

no longer able to find the stopover flights with Hawaii. united must have someone trolling the site!
Interesting. Thanks for the update.
I finally got around to checking this. SFO-HNL, HNL-SFO, SFO-DEN priced at 40k in coach, so I was able to get a free oneway. What did you try and what did it price at?
Do you click multiple destinations? Or Round trip?
Multiple destinations, see the youtube video I made on the subject or Free Oneways on United Awards
So, I tried this with united.com website and although I can see that the flights I am looking for are available individually, when I try to do multiple destinations, the website gives me an error:
! united.com could not find any available flights for award travel meeting your requirements. You may modify your search criteria or review the MileagePlus Travel Award Rules. If you need additional assistance, in the U.S. and Canada call 1-800-396-1751; the U.K., phone 0800 028 5003; elsewhere contact your local United Reservations Office for assistance.
I tried the following:
OGG-LAX 2/3/2012 for 2 pax Business/First
LAX-KBP 5/1/2012 for 2 pax Business/First
As of this writing, the availability does show individually for these particular dates (but I don’t much care about the dates; I am just practicing for when the schedule opens for June of next year).
What am I doing wrong? Thank you!!!
… and when I say 2012, I mean 2013 🙂
I just flew into KBP today! One thing is that your award has to be a roundtrip, so OGG-LAX, LAX-KBP, KBP (or elsewhere in Europe) – LAX to get the free oneway. But the main issue is that multicity searches on United.com are super-glitchy. They show only a fraction of the results you see on oneway searches. And when they don’t show availability, they show a lot of error messages. So the tip here is that you may just have to call in to book and eat the $25 fee. The space you see on oneway searches is bookable, just maybe not by the glitchy multicity online booking tool.
Thanks for checking into it! I still get an error when I add a return flight (KBP to LAX), though now it lets me choose OGG-LAX leg before erroring out. So, I’ll just call United when I pick out my flights!
Enjoy Kiev! I hope to see a trip report! 🙂
Here’s the trip report so far: the English is non-existent for the “man on the street” and the alphabet is indecipherable making it quite the adventure to get around. Love it!
Haha, my husband will love it then! I am fluent in Russian (and can understand enough Ukrainian to get by but hey, everyone can speak Russian in Kiev even if they pretend like they don’t ;-)).
I am guessing you are there for Euro 2012. Awesome!!! GOOOOOOOOOOOL.
My understanding is that they are all speaking Russian to each other in Kiev, it’s only western Ukraine where Ukrainian is the most common spoken language. But the signs here, and tv, and school are in Ukrainian. I was packed in like a sardine in the fan zone in Kiev today to watch Ukraine lose, but I’m still rooting for them.
[…] 5. United Airlines Award 40,000 miles and $10, including a free oneway- With east coast fares to Hawaii exceeding $1,000 on many routes these days, 40,000 miles is a good value. What makes this a top-five value is that United awards to Hawaii can include a free oneway! […]
Any idea if there is a way to take advantage of this on flights originating in HNL?
You can get a stopover on your awards from Hawaii to the US, which is nice, but there’s no way to get a free oneway. You can get a cheap oneway to Asia as part of a mainland award.
For July, 2013, I booked 4 RT award tickets on United IAH to OGG at 40K each, with a long layover in LAX on the return. Is it too late to add the “free” oneway IAH to RDU for September, 2013?
You’d have to pay a $75 fee for changing the destination.
Hello,
What would you recommend to maximize ual miles for a trip to MNL and KOA from PHL? I was originally thinking PHL-HNL stopover HNL-MNL then MNL-PHL and just paying for an inter-island flight from HNL to KOA as I am getting errors trying PHL-KOA stopover KOA-MNL then MNL-PHL. thanks….

If I want to fly IAD-LAX, stopover, then LAX-HNL and OGG-LAX (or would be willing to do San Diego or SFO, can I also book one of those cities back to IAD as my free one-way/2nd open jaw? It won’t work . I can do IAD-LAX stopover, then LAX-HNL and OGG-LAX but nothing I try to do beyond that works – always get an error message.
