Getting to Tahiti with Hawaiian, United, and US Airways Miles and Membership Rewards
November 1, 2012
See my previous posts on Getting to Tahiti with American and Delta Miles.
This post will be about getting to French Polynesia–Tahiti, Bora Bora, and more–with Hawaiian Miles, United MileagePlus Miles, US Airways Dividend Miles, and American Express Membership Rewards. Tahiti is an award I get asked to book frequently through my Award Booking Service, and I wanted to share some free tips.
French Polynesia is a French-speaking “overseas country” controlled by France. It is south of Hawaii and east of Australia. The main tourist spots are Tahiti, Bora Bora, and Mo’orea.
Do Two Things Right Now
October 31, 2012
You've put them off. Do these two things today to save yourself hundreds of dollars on future travel.
First, send 50,000 US Airways miles to a friend or family member. This will cost you $567.50. Have her send you back 50,000 at a cost to her of $567.50. Both your accounts will have 50,000 more US Airways miles than when you started.
You will have purchased miles worth 1.95 cents for 1.13 cents.

Getting to Tahiti with Delta Miles
October 30, 2012
See last week's post on getting to French Polynesia with American miles.
This post will be about getting to French Polynesia–Tahiti, Bora Bora, and more–with Delta SkyMiles. This is an award I get asked to book frequently through my Award Booking Service, and I wanted to share some free tips.
French Polynesia is a French-speaking “overseas country” controlled by France. It is south of Hawaii and east of Australia. The main tourist spots are Tahiti, Bora Bora, and Mo’orea. People go to French Polynesia for the absolutely stunning beach-and-island landscape.

Lufthansa 747-8 Award Space from Los Angeles to Frankfurt
October 30, 2012
Lufthansa has started to display flights from Los Angeles <-> Frankfurt as being operated by a fancy new 747-8, starting December 10, 2012. I've talked a little about Lufthansa's 747-8s before--see Get on an A380, 787 Dreamliner, and New 747-8 on one United Award--and I love them for a few reasons.
First, it's in the beautiful, iconic 747 line. Second, it is a brand new plane, so it has those improvements like bigger bins, bigger windows, LED lighting, and better fuel mileage.

American Airlines Domestic Availability Trick
October 29, 2012
In February from Nairobi, Kenya, I booked an American Airlines award 331 days out from Melbourne, Australia to Los Angeles in Qantas business class (with a later free oneway to Tampa.) See my Anatomy of an Award post on that booking.
On that booking, I noticed something odd about the way that American Airlines releases its domestic award space on some routes.
New Site Design and Functionality
October 28, 2012
I was the original hater of the logo: "Underneath these headings is the ugliest logo in the world." The logo will be changed within two weeks, hopefully within two days.
Yesterday the site was in flux as my designer made some changes that will hopefully make the site more aesthetically pleasing and more functional! I'll walk you through the changes, so you know how to get the information you want to access. Let's start at the top:
The old MileValue had a growing list of Pages on top of every page with titles like Start Here and Meet Up.

Free Giveaway Friday, Delta Surcharge Relief, & Platinum Card non-News

1. Your Platinum Card's Membership Rewards will drop in value for Pay With Points redemptions on February 15, 2013 from 1.25 cents to 1 cent. This is pretty close to not being newsworthy, since Pay With Points is a bad deal at 1.25 cents. I'd rather transfer to Avios, Hawaiian Airlines, or even top off a Delta account before buying a cash ticket with Membership Rewards.
The Points Guy reports that you can call AMEX to cancel your Platinum card until December 30 at 800-525-3355 and receive a prorated refund of the $450 annual fee.

Prepaids are All the Rage--Add Another to the List (if You Live in New England)
Word on the street is that miles and points aficionados may be interested in prepaid debit cards. See How Much is Bluebird Really Worth? and my Bluebird Calculator.
The players involved have included the NetSpend card, Mio card, Wells Fargo prepaid card, US Bank and Nationwide Visa Buxx cards, and the American Express Prepaid card.
MileValue to Speak at the Los Angeles Frequent Traveler University
October 25, 2012
I am excited to announce that I will be speaking at the Los Angeles Frequent Traveler University, being held November 30 - December 2 at the Sheraton Gateway Hotel LAX.
My talk will be about free oneways on awards, probably under a title like Three Vacations, Two Awards: Adding a Free Oneway to Award Tickets.
