15 Miles per Dollar Today Only at United Portal
January 21, 2017
The United shopping portal is offering 15 miles per dollar today only (until 11:59 PM ET on 1/22/17) at a number of stores that normally offer only 2-5 miles per dollar.
I value United miles at 1.6 cents each, so getting 15 miles per dollar on your purchase is like getting 24% of your purchase rebated back in United miles (in addition to the 1x or more you're getting on your credit card purchase normally.)
Here are the 15x stores:

Guide to Low Cost Carrier Travel in Europe
January 21, 2017
Taking no-frills, short distance flights on low cost carriers is a great way to fill in the hole on an open jaw award and to hop around Europe if you're traveling light.
You often cannot redeem traditional miles on these kinds of flights--or if you can it just wouldn't be worth it because the value you'd be getting per mile would be so low.
Economics of Churning: Who Pays for Those Credit Card Bonuses?
January 20, 2017
An interesting post on Reddit caught my eye called "The Economics of Churning: who pays for the rewards?"
("Churning" is the milesphere's term for opening cards, getting their bonuses, closing the cards, and repeating.)
While I don't agree with the post's conclusions about who pays for rewards, it does present a lot of interesting information for anyone who wants to understand the business of credit cards a little bit better.

Maximizing Avianca LifeMiles
January 18, 2017
Avianca LifeMiles are easier to earn than ever thanks to the Avianca Vuela Visa that was introduced at the end of 2016. In light of that fact, today I'm going to go over strategies for maximizing your LifeMiles.
Best Ways to Get Avianca LifeMiles
The new Avianca card issued by Banco Popular comes with 40,000 Avianca LifeMiles after your first purchase on the card and a $149 annual fee.
Redeem American Airlines Miles: Part 3 — Where to Search Award Space for All Partners
January 17, 2017
I am updating and re-posting this series on redeeming American Airlines miles in light of the fact that right now it’s super easy to earn 146,000 American Airlines miles.
For a limited time, the Citi /AAdvantage Platinum Select MasterCard and the CitiBusiness / AAdvantage Platinum Select World MasterCard are both offering 50k bonus miles for spending $3,000 on each card within three months of opening it. The new Barclaycard AAdvantage Aviator Red World Elite MasterCard is offering 40k bonus American Airlines miles after just one purchase and paying the annual fee of $95.
You Can Redeem Alaska Miles on Virgin America & 1st Class Space is Abundant
January 16, 2017
Update 1/18/17: A reader reports that he tried to book San Francisco to Boston Virgin America First Class award space with Alaska miles--he tried various summer dates--and every time received an error message. When he called Alaska, a representative confirmed that there was no award space on the days he checked. Who knows if that will happen to you, but beware that the Virgin Atlantic First Class award space displaying on alaskair.com could be phantom.
Alaska Airlines and Virgin America merged earlier this month, and it's now possible to redeem Alaska miles on Virgin America flights.

Don’t Make This Mistake with Your Priority Pass Membership
January 15, 2017
The Chase Sapphire Reserve®, Citi Prestige, and all American Express Platinum cards offer free Priority Pass Select membership, emphasis on "Select."
Last month I got this email from a vexed reader:
So here is my experience with the highly touted Chase SAPPHIRE Reserve card and its Select Priority Pass allegedly good for getting into 500+ airport lounges.
Newark Airport, Oct. 13, 2016, flying United Airlines Newark to Geneva: "Sorry, don't take the Priority Pass card in THIS (United) lounge.
When Do Arrival Miles Expire?
January 14, 2017
Arrival miles never expire as long as you hold your Barclaycard Arrival PlusTM World Elite MasterCard®. They do disappear the second you cancel the card though.
Other than canceling the card, the only time constraint on using Arrival miles is that you have 120 days after any travel purchase to redeem miles for an offsetting statement credit.
