Don’t Pay the $75 Close In Fee on United (Trick!)
April 15, 2016
Update: I used this trick successfully. Here was my experience.
As I led a session at the Chicago Seminars this weekend on "Special Awards," someone chimed in with an intriguing tip:
There is a simple method to avoid the $75 "close in ticketing fee" on United awards that is triggered when you try to book a ticket within 21 days of departure.
I tested out the proposed method yesterday, and I have some input on how it works.
Alaska Airlines Credit Card Primer: Best Offer? Churnable?

The current sign-up bonus available to the public for the Alaska Airlines Visa Signature® Card is 25,000 Alaska Airlines miles upon approval. There are higher offers out there however, and the official public offer is increasing in May, but with a new minimum spending requirement.
There is no minimum spending requirement to earn the current sign-up bonus of 25,000 miles.
There is also a $75 annual fee.
Delta Eliminates Phone Booking Fee
April 14, 2016
Delta will no longer charge a $25 per passenger fee to book tickets by phone. That's excellent news since some Delta partners like Air Tahiti Nui can't be booked on delta.com.
In February 2015, American Airlines eliminated phone ticketing fees for awards flying airlines that can't be booked on aa.com.
United still has phone ticketing fees for awards--$25 per passenger.

Guide to Booking United Flights to Hawaii with Singapore KrisFlyer Miles
April 14, 2016
It is cheaper to book the exact same United flights to Hawaii with Singapore KrisFlyer miles than with United miles.
United charges 22,500 miles each way in economy and 40,000 miles in First Class between the mainland and Hawaii
Singapore charges 17,500 miles each way in economy and 30,000 miles each way in First Class between the mainland and Hawaii
That's a humongous difference. Instead of costing 90,000 United miles to get two people from your home airport to Hawaii and back, you could pay 70,000 Singapore miles.

You Can Now Redeem American Airlines Miles to Indian Subcontinent via Asia! Woo-Hoo!
April 13, 2016
You can now redeem American Airlines miles to the Indian Subcontinent via Cathay Pacific or American Airlines flights that connect in Hong Kong.
Until today, you could only connect in Europe or the Middle East. Routing via Asia would break your trip into two awards--USA to East Asia + East Asia to Indian Subcontinent.
HUGE! SPG Adds Virgin America as 1:1 Transfer Partner, 30k Points Roundtrip in Flat Bed to Europe
April 13, 2016
Effective immediately, you can transfer SPG Starpoints to Virgin Elevate points at a 1:1 rate. Like all 1:1 partners of SPG, you get 5,000 bonus miles for every 20,000 points transferred, so 20,000 Starpoints equals 25,000 Virgin America points. This is 2-and-a-half times the Virgin America points that you get from competing transferable points.

Round-the-World Example with Half in Flat Bed for 100,000 Miles
April 11, 2016
You can book yourself a tour around Europe, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia stopping in four places for only 100,000 miles total with nearly half the trip in a flat bed. By stopping in four places, I am referring to actual destinations, not connections that have to be under 24 hours.
Much like the Mega Trip to the Caribbean and South America I wrote about a few days ago, this deal relies on piecing together some sweet spot awards (and this time also a low cost carrier flight within Europe) into one big trip.
