20k Miles to All of Europe All Summer
December 4, 2012
Update 5/26/14: This deal is dead since American Airlines eliminated free stopovers.
Or: Save 10k Miles by Adding a Free Oneway
Summer airfare to Europe often tops $1,000 in economy class roundtrip. But you can get to Europe this summer for only 20k miles.
All the legacy carriers--American, Delta, United, US Airways--charge 60k miles roundtrip to Europe in economy class. That's where the European award similarities end.
American and United let you go oneway for 30k miles.
New York to Honolulu Direct for $435
November 29, 2012
Update from Scott: I'm finding $382 all in roundtrip now too:
According to this thread in the ever popular Mileage Run forum on FlyerTalk, Hawaiian Airlines is running a fare sale from New York to Honolulu. Hawaiian Airlines operates a direct flight from JFK to Honolulu, and we are seeing fares for as low as $435 for this direct flight.
There appears to be only one stretch of days in early December and great availability in January and February.
What's the best way to hunt for eligible dates?
I always use the ITA Software Matrix.

Getting to Tahiti with American Airlines Miles
October 23, 2012
Look for a post tomorrow on getting to French Polynesia with Delta miles, Hawaiian miles, and AMEX Membership Rewards.
This post will be about getting to French Polynesia--Tahiti, Bora Bora, and more--with frequent flier miles. This is an award I get asked to book frequently through my Award Booking Service, and I wanted to share some free tips.
French Polynesia is a French-speaking "overseas country" controlled by France. It is south of Hawaii and east of Australia. The main tourist spots are Tahiti, Bora Bora, and Mo'orea. People go to French Polynesia for the absolutely stunning beach-and-island landscape.

How to Get to Australia and New Zealand with American Airlines Miles Part 2
October 4, 2012
This is Part 2 of my two-part post on using AA miles to get to Australia and New Zealand. Read Part 1 first.
Here are a few more ways to get to Australia and New Zealand with American miles.
Air Tahiti Nui and Air Pacific: Connect in the Middle of Nowhere
One horribly annoying rule when redeeming AA miles is that your award cannot transit a region other than the origin region and destination region unless explicitly permitted.

The Five Cardinal Rules of American Airlines Awards
September 20, 2012
There are five cardinal rules of American Airlines award tickets that I wanted to put together in one place for reference. All AA awards must comply with these rules and several other minor ones.
You should consult this post when planning an AA award, especially if you are trying to add a stopover or free oneway.
1. Stopovers are not allowed on American Airlines awards.
All connections on purely domestic itineraries must be less than four hours. All connections on international awards must be less than 24 hours.
2.

Free First Class Next Month: Award Searches on AA.com
September 6, 2012
Hey there, you're reading an outdated post! The updated series from April 2015 can be found here.
This is the twenty-fourth post in a monthlong series. Each post will take about two minutes to read and may include an action item that takes the reader another two minutes to complete. I am writing this for an audience of people who know nothing about frequent flier miles, and my goal is that by the end, you know enough to fly for free anywhere you want to go.
This post presents the basics of using aa.com for award bookings.

How Americans Can Exploit US Airways’ Cheap Awards from South America
August 22, 2012
Yesterday I talked about some great sweet spots on the US Airways chart for awards originating in South America. Maybe you thought that post was irrelevant for Americans.
But Americans can still get half the value of these sweet-spot awards by using open jaw itineraries.
US Airways sweet-spot awards can have tremendous value for Americans if they're employed as part of something I'll call a triangle award.
A triangle award is using three or more oneway itineraries to create a journey that includes two or more destinations.
Which Citi AA Promotion Did You Get
August 17, 2012
A few weeks ago I got this letter in the mail:
Always read your junk mail from credit card companies!
My offer is 3x American Airlines miles on purchases at supermarkets, restaurants, pharmacies, and gas stations up to a maximum of 2,500 bonus miles. Since I would normally earn 1x at those places on this card, I take it to mean that I get my first $1,250 at 3x miles.
I went to the website, typed in my "Invitation Number" and received confirmation I was registered.
