Anatomy of an Award: Last Second Speculative Domestic Booking with British Airways Avios
March 17, 2014
I'm using my miles and points very idiosyncratically at the moment to do something I'm sure none of my readers would want to do. But I think the lessons from my trip should be applicable for a lot of trips you would want to take.
Starting last weekend in Greensboro, North Carolina, I'll be following around the University of Virginia's Men's Basketball Team for the rest of the season.
Huge 17% Off Spring Flights on Frontier Airlines
March 17, 2014
Frontier has announced a 17% discount on domestic flights bought by tomorrow March 18, 2014 and flown by May 21, 2014 with promo code POTOGOLD. (Blackout dates of March 21-23, 2014; March 28-30, 2014; April 4-6, 2014; and April 11-13, 2014 apply.)
This 17% discount does not apply to Frontier’s international destinations like Jamaica, Mexico, Costa Rica, and the Dominican Republic.
To get to those places, your best bet is to redeem 15k Frontier miles each way.

Why Is My American Airlines Award Pricing 25k Miles Higher Than It Should?
March 16, 2014
We just got an interesting comment on Bill's great recent post about Booking Etihad Business Class Using American Miles.
MojoMama is trying to go from Los Angeles (LAX) to the Maldives (MLE) in First Class.
The United States to the Maldives should be 90k miles each way in First Class according to American Airlines' chart. But she's getting charged 115k miles:
Trying to book LAX-JFK(stopover)-AUH-MLE in first for August, but it’s pricing at 115,000 miles. Being told AUH-MLE is separate award because it’s not in the same region, which I know is false.

Combining Alaska and Hawaii onto One Trip This Summer for Only 40k Points
March 11, 2014
Alaska Airlines flies a direct flight between Anchorage and Honolulu.
I love interesting routes from Hawaii--like the Island Hopper across the Pacific--since moving to Oahu, but I think this route has some cool possibilities for everyone, like one vacation that combines Alaska and Hawaii this summer.
Anchorage and Honolulu are 2,777 miles apart. This is a sweet spot on British Airways' distance-based award chart.

The Four Frontier Airlines Awards You Can’t Ignore
March 10, 2014
Frontier Airlines is a Denver-based airline with flights throughout the continental US, Alaska, Mexico, Costa Rica, Jamaica, and the Dominican Republic.
Frontier DestinationsRight now The Frontier Airlines World MasterCard® is offering 40,000 bonus miles after spending only $500 in the first 90 days.
That's a huge sign up bonus for such a tiny minimum spending requirement. Making it even better is the fact that Frontier charges only 10k miles each way for a Standard award within the United States including Alaska.
The Differences Between the Arrival Card and Venture Card
March 9, 2014
I write a lot about the Barclaycard Arrival PlusTM World Elite MasterCard® and very little about the Capital One Venture Card.
Superficially the two cards are similar. Both offer miles that can be redeemed for any flight, hotel, car rental, or other travel expense.
Plus the Venture Card has had a sustained TV advertisement blitz for several years that seems to have gotten through to most people. So a lot of people assume the two cards are identical or just as good as each other.

US Airways Random Buy Miles Promo, Up to 100% Bonus
March 8, 2014
Per the email I received last week, US Airways is again offering up to a 100% bonus on purchased or gifted miles. This "Mystery Bonus" promotion is a slight variant from previous iterations, as the bonus you receive varies by individual frequent flyer account. You might receive a 25%, 50%, 75%, or 100% bonus on purchased and gifted miles.
US Airways frequently runs promotions offering bonuses to buy its miles, including one in December of last year. The deal is hardly a new proposition, especially if you receive an inferior 25%-75% offer like I did.
