Spring Break 2013! A Proposed 26,000 Mile Journey
March 24, 2013
As many of you may know, I am a college student by day and the amusing, yet mystical, Bengali Miles Guru by night. After traveling almost 100,000 miles since January, I knew that my upcoming spring break trip would have to be amazing.

This is the thirty-third post in a monthlong series that started here. Each post will take about two minutes to read and may include an action item that takes the reader another two minutes to complete. I am writing this for an audience of people who know nothing about frequent flier miles, and my goal is that by the end, you know enough to fly for free anywhere you want to go.

The New American Airlines Award Map is Fun But Nearly Useless
March 20, 2013
American Airlines has introduced a cool new Award Map, which tries to make award booking easier. It seems pretty useless to me. I want to be wrong. Please tell us in the comments how it can be useful.
The Award Map lets you input your home airport and either a destination region or goal. Your options:
You also input the number of passengers, how many miles you have, what cabin you want, whether it's one way or roundtrip, and the dates.
Clicking search will hopefully generate a map of results that meet your criteria.

Anatomy of an Award: Negative 7,500 Miles to Fiji/Bora Bora Using United Miles
March 19, 2013
At MileValue, we constantly champion the free oneway on award tickets. Adding a free oneway is possible (to varying degrees) using all four legacy carrier's miles. For more information, make sure to check out Scott's comprehensive posts below:

Free oneways are great, but nothing gets us more excited than "negative" awards.
The Trick to Hold United Awards
March 17, 2013
Update 3/6/14: This post is outdated. See Master Thread: Holds on United Awards
The ability to hold awards is extremely valuable especially at our increasingly popular Award Booking Service. Our clients might need to transfer their Chase Ultimate Rewards or American Express Membership Rewards into their frequent flyer accounts. They might need to purchase additional miles to reach the next award threshold or just simply firm up their hotel plans. Having a few days to hold an award is critical in these cases.
Of the four legacy carriers, American Airlines is the most generous.
