Delta SkyMiles Now Offering 5,000 Mile Awards in Continental United States

Delta is now offering some domestic economy awards for 5,000 miles + $5.60 one way.

Beginners Post: Basics of Delta SkyMiles

This is the ninth post in a monthlong series that started here. Each post will take about two minutes to read and may include an action item that takes the reader another two minutes to complete. I am writing this for an audience of people who know nothing about frequent flyer miles, and my goal is that by the end, you know enough to fly for free anywhere you want to go.

Delta SkyMiles Quarter 2 Change: Delta No Longer Lists Your SkyMiles Balance!

This was an April Fools prank. Glad it got a few people.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

The Delta SkyMiles program has sunk to unimaginable lows. I thought it was ridiculous in February that Delta removed its award charts, so we would no longer know how much an award should cost. Now Delta has gone one step farther: Delta will no longer display how many redeemable SkyMiles you have in your account!

When the award chart was removed, Delta pointed to its improved award calendar as the reason a chart was no longer needed.

Award Space for 12 to Australia over Christmas and New Year

There are five Business Class saver award seats and seven economy saver award seats between Los Angeles and Sydney for much of late December.

The space is on the direct Virgin Australia flight and bookable with Delta miles on delta.com. Connecting from anywhere else in the United States and to anywhere else in Australia/New Zealand is possible for zero extra miles, award space permitting.

This is the ideal way to book what should be a very tough ticket: a trip to Australia over Christmas and New Year.

Why Delta Going One Way on Awards is a Huge Deal

Right now, you pay the same price for a roundtrip award and a one way award booked with Delta miles. Obviously, under current rules, booking a one way award is foolish.

Starting January 1, 2015, we will be able to book one way Delta awards for half the price of roundtrips.

Anatomy of an Award: Tahiti, New Zealand, Australia with SkyMiles

I asked longtime award booker and occasional blog contributor JB to write about a very interesting Delta award he just booked.

A lot of people think Delta miles are worthless, but there are no other miles that could book a single convenient award with long stops in Tahiti and Sydney plus an overnight in Auckland.

A client contacted the MileValue Award Booking Service requesting a slightly modified version a MileValue classic: Tahiti, New Zealand & Australia on One Trip Using Delta Skymiles.

She had tried another award booking service that failed to convince Delta to book the award.

5 Best Products to Book One Way with SkyMiles

We are less than two months from 2015, and what I'm most looking forward to is being able to book one way awards with Delta SkyMiles. The 2015 award chart is already published and no Saver awards are going up in price.

Here are the roundtrip business class prices next year. One ways will be half the price.

2015 SkyMiles Business Class Award Chart

I have booked myself only one SkyMiles awards in the last three years, and the big reasons is that one way awards are often most convenient for my travel style.

China Airlines 777-300ER Business Class Improvement

China Airlines has just taken delivery of its 777-300ERs. The new plane looks beautiful with a top-of-the-line flat bed business class, a quality premium economy, and economy that offers the chance to combine three seats into one family "couch."

Note that China Airlines is based in Taiwan and is a member of SkyTeam. Don't confuse it with Air China, based in Beijing, and a member of Star Alliance.

The new 777-300ERs will be flying between the United States and Taipei starting in December 2014.

Delta Announces 2015 SkyMiles Award Chart

Delta has released its award chart for awards booked on or after January 1, 2015. Check it out here.

Great News: The lowest priced "Level 1" awards (formerly "Saver") will remain at the same price or drop compared to the award chart that goes into effect on June 1, 2014.

SkyMiles have seen a lot of changes the last few months:

First Delta announced a devaluation of its award chart for awards flown June 2014 or later.

How to Put a Delta Award on Hold

Buried in Delta's major award chart devaluation last year was a second piece of bad news: Delta awards could no longer be put on hold under any circumstances.

But there had to be a way, I thought.
