Delta will operate a nonstop flight between New York (JFK) and Honolulu from December 17, 2016 to March 25, 2017 five day a week (not Tuesday or Wednesday.)
Delta doesn't publish its award chart, but it still has a secret award chart. The cheapest awards from the mainland United States to Hawaii are 22,500 Delta miles one way. But we can do a lot better than that.

Winter is the low season in Hawaii, and I think it is the best time to visit because:
there is more award space
lodging is cheaper
it's cold where you live but still 80 degrees in Hawaii
Normally one drawback is that it is rainier in the winter months in Hawaii, but this winter should be drier because El Niño is disrupting weather patterns in the Pacific.
I took a look at United award space from several cities in the center and east of the continental United States to the four major Hawaiian Islands.

Great Award Space to Kona, Hawaii

Getting to the Big Island of Hawaii from the United States mainland is easy with miles. There are a ton of direct flights on several airlines, most of which have fantastic award space. Several of the flights can even be booked for as little as 12,500 miles each way.
I've been on the Kona side of Hawaii Island this week with my family, and it has been fantastic.
The snorkeling on this coast is the best I've ever experienced.

A teenager hopped a fence at San Jose Airport (SJC), climbed into the wheel well of a Hawaiian Airlines 767 and survived almost six hours at heights up to 38,000 feet on his way to Maui (OGG).
He was apparently unharmed and released by the FBI after they realized he wasn't a security threat.
