Update: 1:08 PM ET. I snagged five $100 gift cards and was deciding whether to purchase them.

I decided not to purchase them, releasing them back to the wild. I didn’t want to deal with them being physically mailed “to me” while I’m in Argentina.

As far as I can tell, the gift cards were released at exactly 1:00:00 PM ET and sold out by 1:02 PM ET. Keep clicking Buy Now until you no longer have the option though because someone might abort a sale like I did.

This is what happens if you try to purchase something where all quantities are already in someone’s cart.

As of 1:12 ET, the free night plus breakfast for two at 3,200 Marriotts worldwide is still available for $235.

Today is the start of five weeks of discounted travel packages sponsored by the US Travel Association and American Express called Daily Getaways.

Every weekday at 1 PM ET, a discounted travel package or packages will go on sale and will sell out in a few minutes. Some of the offers will be awesome; some will be duds.

Today’s deal is 19.9% off $100, $500, and $1,000 Marriott GiftCards, which is up to $199 in free money if you stay at Marriotts.

More info on maximizing the deal after the jump.

All Daily Getaways packages are discounted. And you get an additional 10% off each sale price by paying with an American Express, so that’s a no-brainer, and I’ll always quote prices after the American Express discount.

Here’s some of the relevant fine print on Marriott Gift Cards:

  • Marriott GiftCards can be used like cash at over 3,700 participating properties, including any JW Marriott®, EDITIONSM, Autograph Collection®, Renaissance® Hotels, AC by MarriottSM, Marriott® Hotels & Resorts, Gaylord Hotels®, Courtyard® by Marriott, Fairfield Inn & Suites® by Marriott, SpringHill Suites® by Marriott, Residence Inn® by Marriott, TownePlace Suites® by Marriott, and Marriott Vacation ClubSM (rentals only), worldwide.
  • Marriott GiftCards may also be used at participating Ritz-Carlton® Hotels.
  • There is no expiration date on GiftCards.

Marriott GiftCards are being offered for sale in three amounts, all with a 19.9% discount:

$100 Marriott GiftCard for $80.10 (410 available, maximum five per person)

$500 Marriott GiftCard for $400.50 (308 available, maximum two per person)

$1,000 Marriott GiftCard for $801, (75 available, maximum one per person)

I expect all to sell out within minutes of their 1 PM EST sales time, but I think the slowest to sell out will be the $500 gift cards since it will take at least 159 people to sell those out. Be ready with your AMEX card at 1 PM EST if you want a shot at one of these deals.

“Within 10-14 business days of purchase, you will receive your Marriott GiftCard(s) via U.S. mail at the shipping address provided at purchase.” When you get your gift cards, make sure to use them in conjunction with an overall point maximization plan.

  1. Make sure to register for any Marriott promotions by signing up for its newsletter here.
  2. Earn bonus miles for booking your hotel stay on Rocketmiles if possible. More info about Rocketmiles here.
  3. Register with Marriott’s loyalty program here to earn stay credits for your paid stays.

I will be by my computer at 1 PM EST / 10 AM PST / 7 AM HST / (2 PM in Buenos Aires) to try to snag a gift card. What about you? Post your successful or failed attempt in the comments, so we can gauge how quick you had to be to snag a card.
