Until July 31, 2014, you can transfer 20,000 SPG Starpoints to 30,000 US Airways Dividend miles.
This promotion is identical to the current promotion to transfer 20,000 Starpoints to 30,000 American Airlines miles, which makes sense since US Airways and American Airlines have legally merged.
Yesterday I said about the American Airlines promotion: “it’s July 2nd, and I think we can probably declare this the best miles deal July will see!” Of course, such a statement was disproved in less than a day because I consider the US Airways promotion slightly better.
- How many Starpoints can you transfer?
- Do Starpoints transfer instantly to US Airways miles?
- In what increment must you transfer Starpoints to maximize this deal?
- Should you transfer your Starpoints to US Airways miles, American Airlines miles, or neither?
From July 1 through July 31, 2014, simply convert your Starpoints® to US Airways Dividend Miles and earn a 20% bonus. As always, for every 20,000 Starpoints transferred within the same transaction, SPG® will automatically add another 5,000 miles. With the additional 20% mileage bonus offered by the Dividend Miles program, you will receive a total of 30,000 miles from the transaction.”
- 20,000 Starpoints = 20,000 Dividend Miles (1:1 transfer partner)
- Standard SPG bonus = 5,000 Dividend Miles per 20,000 Starpoints transferred
- Dividend Miles 20% mileage bonus = 5,000 Dividend Miles
- Total: 20,000 Starpoints = 30,000 Dividend Miles
You can transfer up to 79,999 Starpoints per 24 hours to an airline. Since you need to send Starpoints in 20k point increments to maximize transfer bonuses, the effective limit is 60,000 Starpoints per day to 90,000 US Airways miles.
Starpoints do not transfer instantly to US Airways miles. My transfer in December 2013 took two days. See How to Transfer SPG Starpoints to Airline Miles for full details of the process and screen shots.
Other than the daily limit, there is no limit to the number of Starpoints you can transfer to US Airways miles during this promotion.
Should You Transfer to US Airways miles, American Airlines miles, or Neither?
I don’t have much to add to my Full Analysis of Current AA/SPG Transfer Bonus which ran down:
- Should you transfer Starpoints to AAdvantage miles speculatively this month?
- What are the 30+ airline partners of Starpoints?
- What are the 10+ to which I’d transfer?
- What are the three best?
- What are the strengths of those three airline programs?
- What is my forecast for upcoming devaluations?
- What are four other great uses of Starpoints besides airline transfers?
- Will I transfer?
- Should you?
Pay careful attention to the sections on the strengths of US Airways miles and American Airlines miles.
I said in that post that I was planning to speculatively transfer all but 45,000 of my Starpoints to American Airlines miles. I think instead I’ll transfer all but 45,000 of my Starpoints to US Airways miles.
I value US Airways miles slightly more than American Airlines miles because of the former’s cheaper award prices and laxer routing rules. Plus I have enough American Airlines miles right now for any one or two awards I’d like to book and not nearly as many US Airways miles.
Will you be transferring Starpoints to American Airlines, US Airways, both, or neither this month?
Terms and Conditions
Dividend Miles bonus mile terms and conditions: To qualify for this Dividend Miles bonus mile offer, you must initiate the mileage conversion with Starwood Preferred Guest between 12 AM (CST) July 1 and 11:59 PM (CST) July 31, 2014 (the ‘promotion period’), and be in good standing in the Dividend Miles program. You can convert multiple times during the promotion period.
To earn the 20% conversion bonus, you must convert points from Starwood Preferred Guest. This offer is non-transferable and non-reversible.
Bonus miles will be posted within 7 business days after the initial conversion activity has been posted by Starwood Preferred Guest. Bonus miles earned in this promotion do not count toward elite status qualification.
Starwood Guest Preferred transfer to miles terms and conditions: Starwood Preferred Guests can transfer up to 79,999 of your Starpoints into Dividend Miles at a 1-to-1 ratio. And for every 20,000 Starpoints transferred within the same transaction, you will earn 5,000 bonus Starpoints which will be automatically added to your transfer up to a maximum of 94,999 miles per eligible transfer.
There is no minimum Starpoint transfer requirement for Platinum Preferred Guest members. Gold Preferred Guest members have a minimum transfer requirement of 1,500 Starpoints, and Preferred Guest members have a minimum transfer requirement of 2,500 Starpoints.
Transfer maximums are based on a combination of member Starpoints and the Starwood Preferred Guest airline transfer transaction bonus. Only one airline transfer transaction per member per 24 hour period is allowed; multiple transfer transactions within the same 24 hour period will reject. Both the Starwood Preferred Guest and Dividend Miles account must have identical member names in order to complete this request; different names will cause the transfer to reject. Airline transfers are one-way, non-reversible, and non-refundable.
