You have six days left to use your US Airways miles to book EVA Airlines flights through April 14, 2015.

As I wrote in “US Airways Losing Four Partners in the Next Few Months,” four of the Star Alliance partnerships that US Airways carried over when it joined oneworld are ending soon. The first one to end is US Airways’ partnership with EVA Airlines, next Wednesday May 14.

EVA Airlines is a Taiwanese airline that flies to Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York, and Seattle with incredible award space on a top-notch flat bed business class product. (Click here for a trip report.)

Award space is mind-bogglingly good for two passengers in economy or business class on EVA’s routes from the US to Taiwan and beyond for most of the next 11 months.

This week is the time to lock in a great product at an incredibly low price with US Airways miles before the opportunity disappears.

  • Where can you search EVA award space?
  • How available is it?
  • Where can you fly on EVA?
  • How can you book EVA award space with US Airways miles?
  • What are the options with US Airways miles once it loses its partnership with EVA?

Where to Search EVA Award Space

EVA Airlines is a Star Alliance partner, and its award space is searchable on united.com. All the EVA award space that is displayed on united.com will be bookable with US Airways miles for the next week. This award space extends into April 2015.

What is the Award Space Picture

Award space is wide open on United States to Taiwan routes on EVA Airlines in economy and business for most of the next 11 months.

Space this month if you want a last-second getaway is available, mostly in business class.

Starting in July and for the rest of the year, space is even more widely available from Los Angeles to Taipei.

And if you look at 10-11 months from now, award space is available for two passengers in both cabins literally every day.

And most days have several flight times to choose from.

San Francisco to Taipei shows similar availability in March and April 2015.

As does New York to Taipei.

Where Can You Fly on EVA?

Taiwan really interests me as a destination–I’m thinking September 2014–but if it doesn’t interest you, you can fly EVA from the United States to Asia and Europe via Taipei. EVA serves all these destinations.

How Can You Book EVA Award Space with US Airways Miles?

  1. Find EVA award space on united.com.
  2. Call US Airways at 800-622-1015 to book the space.

US Airways will charge 60k miles roundtrip from the United States to Taiwan in economy and 110k miles roundtrip in business class.

This is a a steal because United would charge 160k miles roundtrip for EVA business class between the United States and Taiwan.

To Southeast Asia, the price is 80k US Airways miles roundtrip in economy and 120k in business class.

If you used the EVA award space to route the long way to Europe, you might get an agent who charges you only 100k miles roundtrip in business class.

In addition to the miles, US Airways will collect government taxes (low throughout Asia) plus a $50 award processing fee.

You must BOOK EVA award space by May 14, 2014. You can FLY the award you’ve booked as far out as you can book. On May 14, you’ll be able to book award flights through approximately April 14, 2015.

If you later need to change a US Airways award with EVA flights–for voluntary or involuntary reasons–you will not be able to change to other EVA flights. After May 14, 2014, US Airways will have no access to EVA flights for any reason. So changes would need to make use of other US Airways partners.

What Options Will Remain for US Airways Miles to Asia After The Partnership with EVA Ends?

US Airways’ oneworld alliance is solid in Asia. Cathay Pacific offers a fantastic business and first class product from the United States to Asia.

Another option is Japan Airlines.

Within Asia, oneworld has Malaysia Airlines and SriLankan Airlines.

Getting US Airways Miles

Right now, the US Airways MasterCard is offering 40,000 bonus miles on first purchase.

Not only is that a mega-sign up bonus for no minimum spending requirement, but US Airways has the best award chart of any airline.

Another reason to get the card now is that it will disappear in early 2015 when the US Airways and American Airlines loyalty programs merge. Get the miles while you still can.

I will try to use my US Airways miles as soon as possible to take advantage of the US Airways award chart and partners. You don’t need to rush to spend your US Airways miles if you have no use for them at the moment, though, because when the US Airways and American Airlines programs merge, the miles balances will merge too.
