The Chase Freedom is offering 20,000 bonus Ultimate Rewards after spending $500 in the first three months. This is double the normal sign up bonus.
It is also offering up to 50,000 bonus Ultimate Rewards for existing cardholders who refer their friends to the Freedom.
I have the Freedom. The sign up bonus is puny, but the card has no annual fee, and has 5x bonus categories that rotate every quarter. I got it to hold forever and to maximize the 5x category each quarter to the tune of 30,000 Ultimate Rewards per year.
- How can you maximize category bonuses with the Freedom?
- What card do you also have to have to maximize the value of a Freedom?
- How can you sign up for the 20k offer while getting another 5k bonus points for someone else?
- How can you get your referral link into this post?
Maximizing Freedom
The Freedom earns Ultimate Rewards that do NOT transfer to hotels or airlines. These Ultimate Rewards can be redeemed for 1 cent each of cash back. If you have a Sapphire Preferred or Ink Plus, though, you can transfer Freedom’s Ultimate Rewards to one of those accounts and from there to hotels and airlines. Doing this means you should easily get much more than 1 cent of value per point.
Full details on this process here.
The 4th quarter of 2014 5x categories are Amazon, Zappos, Sears, and more. Here’s how to register for those bonuses, which you can do through December 15, 2014.
Each quarter, your first $1,500 in spending in the 5x categories earn 5x Ultimate Rewards; that adds up to 30,000 points per year if you maximize the categories.

Does Chase have a limit on how many of their cards you can have? I already have 3 (CSP, BA, and United), and my last App-O-Rama was 2 weeks ago. I’m wondering if it would be worth it to upset my 91 day app cycle. This has been a card I have had my eye on for the 5x categories.
If there is a limit, it is certainly higher than 4 because I have had that many.
I see no reference to the 20K point bonus anywhere on the Chase Freedom webpage or application.
They call it a $200 bonus. It is actually 20,000 Ultimate Rewards that you can redeem for 1 cent cash back or transfer to your Sapphire Preferred or Ink Plus accounts as explained in this post. Read the terms and conditions or trust me.
I have 3 chase cards currently, the last 2 I got a little over 3 months ago. I have excellant credit score. Would Chase give me a Freedom and Sapphire card at the same time?
Yes, my wife got both approved yesterday
There is no definitive answer. People have been approved for more than one card at a time.
