On top of that, Chase is offering 5,000 Ultimate Rewards for each person that existing cardholders refer to the Chase Freedom card. You can earn up to 50,000 Ultimate Rewards from this promotion, and I’ll embed some readers’ referral tweets in this post, so more people have a chance to earn referral bonuses.

I know the category bonus says “5% cash back” and the referral offer says “get $50 cash back for each friend.” This is only because Chase insists on marketing Freedom as a cash back card. In point of fact, Freedom earns Ultimate Rewards, which can be redeemed for cash, and I am correct in saying that you will earn 5 Ultimate Rewards per dollar at restaurants and 5,000 Ultimate Rewards per referral.

Why You’d Want to Get the Freedom

The Chase Freedom comes with 10,000 Ultimate Rewards after spending $500 in the first three months.

Most people get the card not because of the sign up bonus, but because of the rotating 5x categories. Every three months, you can get 5 Ultimate Rewards per dollar in new spending categories on your first $1,500 of spending. Max out the categories each quarter, and that’s 30,000 Ultimate Rewards per year. For April to June, the 5x categories are restaurants, Bed Bath & Beyond, H&M, and

The Ultimate Rewards earned on a Freedom are not transferable to airlines or hotels. That’s why to get maximum value from a Freedom, you need to have a Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card or Ink Plus. Transfer the Ultimate Rewards from your Freedom to one of those cards, and then you can transfer the Ultimate Rewards from your Ink Plus or Sapphire Preferred 1:1 to United, British Airways, Korean, Southwest, Virgin Atlantic, Hyatt, Amtrak, and more.

The Freedom has no annual fee.

How can you earn up to 50,000 Ultimate Rewards?
