Krakow, Poland Bleg

I just arrived in Krakow for about 72 hours with hotel reservations but no real plan or guidebook. Any tips on what to do, see, or eat would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

  1. Funny, I just helped my parents plan a trip out there.

Not knowing your interests…walk around Old Town and check out the many squares, churches, and restaurants (or join one of the many walking/biking tours), see Wawel Castle, visit Pałac Biskupow Krakowskich (former home of John Paul II), learn about Jewish heritage in the Kazimierz district, take a river cruise, walk around the Planty city park, or head out of town to the Wieliczka salt mines or Auschwitz.

    • Yes, just walking from the train station to the Holiday Inn was awesome, and Auschwitz will happen too. Thanks for the tips.

  2. from London to Krakow?

    by train?

if so, how long is the train ride?

    • No, I had already flown London to Paris last week. Today I flew Paris to Krakow. Quick two hour hop on easyJet.

  3. 1) I second the salt mine tour. You can take a bus there yourself.
    2) If you go to Auschwitz, it’s probably best to take a tour there.
    3) Try dining in a milk bar. Everyone in there will be locals and the menu will be all in Polish but the food is cheap and it is an experience.

  4. What is a milk bar? A type of typical Polish restaurant, I guess? Why is it called that? Thanks for the tips.

    • It’s like a tiny cafeteria. The idea was to provide simple home-style meals at cheap prices. I just ordered random stuff off the menu on the wall and ended up with strawberry pierogies. A bit of nostalgia to Poland’s communist past.

  5. eat off the square… get pierogis, stuffed cabbage (glumkie?), keibalsa.

the salt mine is kind of boring, but if your there for three days you can check it out
aushwitz is definitely worth checking out. I walked from the train station but there are buses. I didn’t do a tour reading the descriptions of each area was fine. the experience was really moving

a local drink is called zabrufka (not spelt correct). you can ask anyone for the bison vodka and they would know.. it usually comes straight with a. lemon, squeeze the lemon and it’s a great drink.
